This is an e-mail that I received from Gwen Agboat, a neighbour in our community, informing us of a very serious situation that occurred in our neighbourhood.  I think it is important to pass this message onto the residents of our community to be alert to such activities.  Practicing safety with our children is an ongoing event.  Please read on.  Thank you.

Comments: Hi...

I've been meaning to send this note for several weeks. I don't know whether the AWCA has put out it's newsletter since Halloween... but I have a safety issue I'd like to mention concerning some of the Halloween decorations I observed in our neigbourhood.

This year is the first year I've taken my daughter out trick-or-treating. I was alarmed at how many homes illuminate their Jack O' Lanterns with a candle--and leave it on their steps or porch, completely unattended!!

A number of years ago, there was a well-publicized Halloween tragedy in the United States, where the hem of a little girl's witch costume came in contact with a candle-lit pumpkin. Due to the nature of the fabric, it ignited, and the child was engulfed in flames in a matter of seconds. The girl died of severe burns to over 90% of her body the day after the incident.

In the interest of the safety of the children in our neighbourhood, perhaps it could be suggested in a future newsletter that if people want to illuminate their pumpkins with a candle, please be responsible, and keep it INSIDE the doorway.

Regards,

Margaret Gava

Comments:Hello Altona Neighbours!

With the recent unfortunate death of the little girl in Toronto (Holly Jones).  I have realized how important having a strong community tie is.  We have beautiful wonderful children in our community and we all need to get together within this Altona West Accociation and make it a safe and great place for them to grow up.

Every year I have said "Next year I will get more involved". Well I for one am not gonna wait for a tradgedy to strike and wake me up.  I am awake now and want to take on some responsibility to help keep our community Safe.

SO COME ON AND JOIN WITH ME AND KEEP THIS PLACE THE REASON YOU MOVED HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE....

SAFE AND WONDERFUL TO RAISE KIDS!

Comments:Has anybody ever noticed how many cats we have roaming the neighborhood? Some of them are feral, however a good many are "outdoor" cats that are owned by people in our community.

Being a lover of cats, and of all animals, I shiver when I see these creatures roaming outside in nearly Arctic temperatures!  Many of them are wet, cold and hungry.

It is an especially dangerous time of year for them.  There is a lot of antifreeze around and cats love the sweet taste. Unfortunately, once they ingest it there is not much that can be done to save them, as the poison is usually fatal.  Also, cats seek warm places for shelter.  One of the warmest is near a car engine.  Too many are killed and maimed each year by being caught in a fan belt of a car.  Before you start your car, please bang on the hood to scare away any animals that may have crawled up inside for warmth.

Just a thought.

Thanks,
Margaret Gava
