Parkfest 2002
September 24th, 2002![]() |
On Saturday September 14th, we hosted our annual Parkfest Party in Valleyview Park. Although the morning started off overcast and there was a threat of rain in the air, by noon, the sky had cleared up and we enjoyed an afternoon of sun and warm temperatures.
This year's event marked the 10th anniversary of the Altona West Community Association. In fine AWCA tradition, there was plenty of good food to eat, rides and carnival games to entertain the children and of course our raffle table.
We rented a stage to allow several local groups to provide entertainment throughout the afternoon. A special thanks to Cynthia's School of Dance, Energy Martial Arts and Extreme Fitness for taking the time to put on a fabulous show for our community.
The Pickering Fire Department was on hand for part of the afternoon to offer the children an opportunity to get a close look at a real fire truck and the equipment used by our firefighters. It is always great to have your team participate in our annual event.
Constable Dennis M. Omelanchuk of the Durham Regional Police Services paid us a visit with his patrol car. He spent the afternoon answering questions about the police services and showed off some of the equipment that our police officers use on a daily basis. Both children and adults alike were interested in spending some time with Officer Dennis. The AWCA would like to thank him for joining us for Parkfest this year.
Our raffle table consisted of 14 great prize packages made up from contributions from various generous sponsors. There were also two special raffle prizes for our volunteers, and two for members who registered at the Membership Table. We were also giving our registered members a free box of cereal and some cookies compliments of Kraft foods.
Local Councillor David Pickles and Regional Councillor Rick Johnson both took some time out of their busy Saturday to drop by. They have always been supportive of our Community Association and we appreciate them making an appearance.
Representatives from Ontario Power Generation were also present during the afternoon. They offered an opportunity for the children to challenge their knowledge of energy and conservation, and win some nice prizes.
As in previous years, the Parkfest Party would not have been a success if it wasn't for the efforts and support of our many volunteers and sponsors. Thank you for all of your help.
