Streetproofing 2002
It is never too late nor too early to teach streetproofing to your children. Nowadays, more parents go out to work and thus more children are vulnerable to becoming victims of crime. Teaching your children safely rules and streetproofing tips can help minimize the possibilities.
Communication is the key. Children learn from good examples and consistency. Children learn safety rules and streetproofing from their teachers at school and from Police Officers who visit their schools. They learn from television and from other sources. It is however paramount that children be taught by parents, teachers, caregivers and your community police officers on an ongoing basis.
As your Elementary School Liaison Officer, I feel it is necessary for everyone to guide our children in the proper direction and explain to them the potential dangers that face them in the course of their daily activities.
Short of enclosing your children in a "protective bubble" until they reach adulthood, it is virtually impossible to expect that your child will go through infancy, childhood and adolescense without experiencing traumatic events of one sort or another. It is, therefore, the intention of this handout to provide you, the parent, with suggestions that may be of assistance in creating the safest possible environment for you child.
I encourage you to review this handout which contains three age specific pages. Look over the information with your children and help them understand what is being said.
Yours in Safety,
Constable Dennis M. Omelanchuk #381
Durham Regional Police Service
